The Children’s Sailing Trust help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds discover sailing
Funding from the Charles Reynolds Fund has supported The Children’s Sailing Trust with the costs of delivering their new Discover Sailing programme.
The grant of £7,200 gave children from disadvantaged backgrounds living in the TR12 postcode the opportunity that they may not otherwise have been given to learn how to sail and achieve a Royal Yachting Association Stage 1 certificate. The Social Mobility Commission reported a 20% gap in sports participation between children from the wealthiest and poorest backgrounds.
Through the new Discover Sailing programme, children have been able to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capabilities, helping them to build life skills in the community and to allow their confidence to grow.
“Some children have been in open water for the first time, worn a wetsuit for the first time and one went into the sea for the first time.” Teacher, Manaccan School 2021
“Grade Ruan Primary School children have have learnt many skills and also a sound safety knowledge of the water. In an area with very mixed family backgrounds, there have been many of our children who have benefitted from this unique opportunity, children who would otherwise have never been sailing or out on the river.”
