Urgent appeal: Surviving Winter

Rice and Peas CIC Windrush 75 Celebration and ‘Be Me’ sessions

Genna Williams, Grants Officer, recently spent the evening at Rice and Peas CIC in Redruth to learn more about how funding from Cornwall Community Foundation is helping to support the work they provide in their community.

We were delighted to be able to award Rice and Peas CIC with a grant of £2,200 from the Police Property Act Fund. This funding enabled them to put on weekly ‘Be Me’ empowerment sessions to divert young people away from drugs, alcohol and anti social behaviour. This is an incredibly important service to help young people positively engage within the community and give them a place to go with a purpose.

More recently, Rice and Peas CIC were awarded £1,000 from the Community Fund to go towards their Windrush 75 year celebration held at Kresen Kernow in Redruth. Grants Officer, Genna Williams, was lucky enough to be invited to this celebration and was greeted by Beresford, director of Rice and Peas CIC.

This incredible event brought together members of the local community to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain on the 22nd June 1948. There were displays of many local people’s family members including Beresford’s Grandma and Mum, these were displayed as a representation of the Caribbean community’s contribution to British society. There was music from Ukahayles and Konquerin soundz, Caribbean food and drink and inspirational talks from various speakers.

Genna told us “It was a privilege to attend and be made to feel so welcome and I greatly enjoyed sampling the Jamaican patties and alcohol-free punch.”
