Black Voices Cornwall’s Celebration of Culture celebrates culture, diversity and inclusivity.

In 2020, Black Voices Cornwall were moved by the local outcry during the Black Lives Matter movement. Today they are empowering local authorities and organisations to be more inclusive.

Through their work, they are dedicated to improving the lives of local people experiencing isolation, prejudice or discrimination because of their ethnicity. Using education, advocacy, and celebration, they are working on their vision of an actively anti-racist Cornwall.

In April 2023, Black Voices Cornwall hosted a Celebration of Culture Event. With £5,000 awarded from The Community FundA sum of money made available for grant making, often with specific criteria/conditions., the charity could arrange venue hire, buy items like a gazebo for the event, and invest in banners for marketing. 

Over 3,000 people attended this event. Truro City Council applauded Black Voices Cornwall for gathering so many people in Truro to celebrate culture in a safe and inclusive environment. 

The celebration has infused Cornwall with Culture and by making it free and family friendly, children and young people could be immersed in their cultural heritages and access the range of amazing cultures that exist.

One family shared how hard it’s been trying to get their children involved in events representative of their heritages in Cornwall. 

The Celebration of Cornwall Event had been just what they were looking for, and they said they were delighted to see their children dancing along with the cultural performers, trying different food from around the world, and getting their faces painted.

They have since stayed involved with Black Voices Cornwall, who plan to bring more cultural, family friendly, and free events to Cornwall in the future.
