Bodmin Amateur Boxing Club make sessions accessible to all with a grant from the Police Property Act Fund
Police Property Act Fund
Bodmin Amateur Boxing Club has been supporting the local community since 2000 offering boxing sessions for everyone.
With a £3,000 grant from the Police Property Act FundA sum of money made available for grant making, often with specific criteria/conditions. they were able to deliver 20 additional free sessions. The accessibility of the sessions enabled young people for all backgrounds to participate in the sport and be part of a large community.
The funding all enabled two coaches to gain accreditation and for the club to purchase additional equipment for young people to borrow.
This enabled younger members to take part in the sport, that have been unable to attend due to low incomes. The club expressed that although they have historically tried to offer free sessions to young people who needed it, there was often embarrassment at not being able to pay towards sessions or equipment. Once young people learnt the projectA piece of work that delivers an output. was fully funded, they were confident attending.
The project achieved improved mental health and wellbeing for 25 people, with 10 reporting a decrease in stress, anxiety and/or symptoms of depression.
The project promoted community resilience: 20 people reported that they feel an increased sense of belonging in their community and five people reported that they were less likely to re-offend or engage in anti-social behaviour.
One attendee came from challenging family circumstances, with a sibling that needs to attend hospital on a regular basis. He would often attend sessions having not eaten or with no funds to pay for sessions. The funding enabled him to attend session for free, without embarrassment and to borrow equipment. The club can also ensure he has something to eat and drink and that he has warm clothes wear to go home. The grant has been life changing for this individual.
