Film Fun with Friends is thriving
Indian Queens Pantomime Society’s film club brings community together through classic films.
The Film Club provides an outlet for over 50’s in the community to meet up and socialise. Many members are on restricted incomes and for some any expenditure can be a potential barrier. So, the film club makes watching nostalgic films and meeting up with friends easier.
Grant awarded & impact
In October 2023 the society was awarded £2,205 from The Community Fund to continue running ‘Film Fun with Friends’. The film club invites over 50s members to watch nostalgic films like Casablanca, Brief Encounter, and old cowboy films with a cream tea.
With this funding, the film club could pay for a film license, hall hire, and a special event which they would be unable to do otherwise. Thanks to the special event, membership has increased.
With increased membership, more members are meeting to socialise, make new friends, reminisce over an old film, chat, and enjoy an afternoon out. The organisers have seen a positive effect on members’ mental wellbeing and health as a result.
Linda moved to the area over 4 years ago as a widow but had not wanted to go out and meet new people or socialise until recently.
She attended ‘Film Fun with Friends’ alone for the first time after looking out for something to do in the local community online. She was apprehensive at first, but said that everyone was ‘so welcoming’ that she enjoyed herself meeting and interacting with new people.
