Moorvision brings outdoor adventure to visually impaired young people across Cornwall

Date awarded: Dec 2024
Grant amount:  £1,000
Grant programme:

The Cornish Lithium Community Fund

A £1,000 grant from the Cornish Lithium Community Fund has enabled Moorvision to provide fully accessible outdoor sporting activities to 80 children and young people with visual impairments across Cornwall.

Moorvision recognises that many young people with vision impairment face significant barriers to accessing adventurous outdoor activities. For those living in rural Cornwall, these challenges are even greater, with isolation and limited opportunities to connect with peers who share similar experiences.

The funding supported a range of thrilling activities including rock climbing, sailing, canoeing, rafting and kayaking. All sessions were delivered at specialist centres equipped to support disability sports, ensuring that young people with vision impairment as their sole disability, as well as those with additional complex needs, could participate safely and confidently.

The grant enabled 80 children and young people from various Cornish communities to experience these activities, many for the first time. With support from eight dedicated volunteers, the programme not only improved participants’ health, fitness and wellbeing, but also brought together young people from isolated communities across Cornwall.

The response was overwhelming. Every single activity offered was booked to 100% capacity, demonstrating the real demand for accessible outdoor sports opportunities for visually impaired young people in Cornwall.

Story of change

Twins Matt and Charlie live in a rural area of Cornwall. Both are severely sight impaired and are also full-time wheelchair users. They have endured years of surgery and other medical interventions that have restricted attendance at school and other activities.

Moorvision was able to offer the twins the amazing opportunity of taking part in climbing and abseiling and canoeing, as well as other sports, at a Calvert Trust residential trip. With the right equipment and support, the boundaries disappeared and the twins achieved such a huge amount.
