Moorvision use a £1,000 grant to help put on fully accessible family workshops
Moorvision provides support, activities, and shared experiences for families of children and young people with vision impairment across the South West.
The Vision Impairment Young Achiever (VICTA) Award is a national programme that encouraged curiosity and freedom for children with vision impairment. As Moorvision seeks to support more families in Cornwall, they have brought the scheme to the region.
Grant awarded & impact
In November 2023, Moorvision were awarded £1,000 from Carew Pole Charitable Trust. This would help them run Cornwall Children with Vision Impairment Young Achiever’s Award (VICTA) Scheme. Through the scheme, children and young people took part in science activities with tactile and sensory engagement.
104 people who attended reported reduced loneliness for them and their children and shared that the activities had improved their children’s self-esteem and confidence.
The VICTA Young Achiever’s Award Scheme provides fully accessible science and nature activities for children. As well as engaging in chemistry and physics activities, young people got involved in forest school, and even got to meet deer, meerkats, and owls.
For one parent, the forest school day was the best thing their kids had done for a long time. At forest school, their son could listen to, touch and smell things rather than just looking.
As well as enjoying how much there was for the children to do, they really valued meeting new families they could stay in touch with. So while this scheme gave visually impaired young people to enjoy sensory activities, it also created a network of families who could support each other.
