Outdoor sessions increase skills and confidence for children in Newquay thanks to a grant from The Headland Hotel
Headland Hotel Community Fund
Funding from The Headland Hotel Community FundA sum of money made available for grant making, often with specific criteria/conditions. has enabled Imagine Outdoors Together to provide free outdoor sessions for young people in the Newquay area.
Imagine Outdoors Together believe that time in the outdoors can have huge benefits on young peoples physical and mental well-being.
These sessions can be accessed by everyone but have a focus on those with social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. These sessions help to build confidence, friendships, and fine motor skills. Sessions can include art projectsA piece of work that delivers an output., mini bushcraft, and games.
We were delighted to hear from Imagine Outdoors Together who wanted to share an update on how they are getting on:
“Our well being in the outdoors project has been going really well so far. Our family mornings had wonderful numbers. We have been able to provide free outdoor sessions for over 200 families across Newquay. Here we have provided a variety of outdoor activities for families all aimed towards getting people in the fresh air. Helping them to realise the benefits that time in green and blue spaces can have for the whole family.
Our sessions have aimed towards building outdoor confidence in parents. Encouraging community cohesion in a safe space and providing fun well being activities for all ages. We have made connections with the wildlife around us by completing bug hunts, making bird feeders and discovering signs of wildlife in our local area. We have made fabulous artworks from sticks, leaves and flowers and we have made connections with new people through outdoor play.
One parent stated that they felt more confident in taking their child out for walks in their local area because of the knowledge they had gained from our sessions. We have worked with other local well being organisations to provide outdoor sessions. These include yoga, dance, the importance of drinking water and even how to clean your teeth.”
Having a child with additional needs, coupled with current financial pressures, means it can be extremely hard for parents to find suitable activities for their child. Imagine Outdoors Together recognise how important being outdoors can be for young people. It helps promote confidence, develop social skills and gives a sense of belonging to young people. Imagine Outdoors Together are delighted to be able to provide these opportunities thanks to their recent funding.
