Sea Sanctuary is a marine-based, mental health Charity founded in 2006 and the only marine-based Charity in the UK to have been commissioned by the National Health Service. Sea Sanctuary helps individuals, children, young people and adults in communities who are struggling with their mental health. Often beneficiaries present with anxiety, depression, self-injurious behaviour or personality disorders.
Sea Sanctuary was supported with a grant through CCF from the Mental Health Fund for Children and Young People. This enabled four young people undergo Take the Helm, a structured programme of marine based activities interwoven with the therapeutic principles of mindfulness and cognitive behaviour therapy.
The parents of one participant said, " I would like to thank you for all the outstanding help you have given our [….] during her recent stay with you on Fire Dancer. Last Thursday when we collected her from the quay she looked happy, fit, relaxed and with her great smile, just as we liked to remember her. She was full of positive comments and that it was different to what she expected but better, what more could you want! And she still has the smile! Thank you all."
