Howton Solar Farm Fund

St Mellion C of E Primary School, based in rural Pillaton, received a grant of £4,500 from the Howton Solar Farm Fund to enhance outdoor learning opportunities for its pupils.

With 22% of students eligible for pupil premium, the school was keen to ensure that all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, could benefit equally from access to outdoor education. The funding has enabled the school to transform its outdoor spaces, creating a growing area, investing in Forest School equipment, and enhancing provision for younger children in the outdoor nursery.

The project was designed to do more than improve facilities. By embedding outdoor learning into the school experience, St Mellion aims to nurture resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Qualities that are essential for children growing up in an increasingly complex world. It also provides opportunities for children to discover new interests and hobbies, supporting their long-term mental health and wellbeing.

The impact has already been significant. The new resources have opened up opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning, helping children to build confidence and develop practical skills outside the traditional classroom environment. For some pupils, access to appropriate outdoor clothing, also funded through the grant, has been key in ensuring they can fully participate.

An unexpected success has been the school’s new polytunnel, where crops have flourished beyond expectations. The level of care required led to the creation of a student-led “Garden Crew”, giving children responsibility for daily maintenance. What began as a logistical challenge has evolved into a valuable leadership opportunity, with pupils developing a strong sense of ownership, teamwork, and accountability. For more vulnerable children, this routine has also provided a calming, structured activity that supports emotional wellbeing.

The difference this funding has made is perhaps best illustrated through the experience of one pupil. A child who previously struggled in the classroom environment, finding it difficult to focus and regulate emotions, has thrived through the gardening project. Discovering a natural talent and passion for planting, they have become a committed member of the Garden Crew, taking pride in their role within the polytunnel. The hands-on, sensory nature of the activity has provided a positive outlet for their energy, helping them to feel more settled, confident, and engaged.

This project demonstrates how targeted funding can create meaningful, lasting change. By investing in outdoor learning, St Mellion C of E Primary School is not only enhancing education but supporting children to grow into resilient, confident individuals, ready to make the most of their future.
