Grant amount:  £5,000
Grant programme:

Police Property Act Fund

With this grant St Petrocs were able to run their drug counselling service ‘Freshfield’, which delivered the Drug Diversionary Project

Freshfield ran a telephone helpline that:  Diverted people away from drug use, by providing information regarding risks.

  • Delivered relapse-prevention work and counselling to treat underlying trauma.
  • Supported people to access safe spaces in our Resource Centres, so they can engage in diversionary activities such as our art group, IT club and coffee corner.
  • Engaged people with our skills and employment programme.
  • Signposted drug users and affected others to wider services.

St Petrocs reported seeing an increase in demand on their services year on year, making it more challenging to provide everyone with the detailed level of support they require to end their substance misuse. Drug and alcohol problems are a major issue for people experiencing homelessness. Not only can it be a cause of homelessness, but it can be a major barrier to accessing housing and employment. The Freshfield service offered free confidential advice to clients, on how to divert and reduce their substance misuse.

“You’ve given me so much support and advice over the years, but more importantly than that, you have been a constant witness to my journey, and as such I’ve never felt alone.”

Of the 50 beneficiaries

  • 35 reported that they are less likely to commit anti-social behaviour
  • 35 reported increased resilience and/or self-care
  • 40 felt they had a say in the decisions that affect them
  • 35 reported a reduction in stress, anxiety and/or symptoms of depression

About the fund

The Police Property Act Fund is aimed at preventing rural crime and reducing anti-social behaviour in rural and coastal areas.

The funding has been made available from the Police (Property) Regulations which is a statutory requirement to deal with money and other property which comes into the possession of the Police in connection with criminal charges or which is handed in by members of the public.
