The power of community, one sea swim at a time
The Amaranth Fund
Every morning, whatever the weather, a welcoming group gathers on Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth. Some come for a sea swim, others for yoga, but they all come for the same reason – connection.
They are much more than just a swimming group, they provide opportunities to improve mental, emotional and physical wellbeing, confidence, offering free swim coaching, wellbeing courses, yoga, social networking and support to all of their members. They believe that the power of swimming and other wellbeing practices can transform lives.

In 2024, Cornwall Community Foundation awarded funding from the Amaranth FundA sum of money made available for grant making, often with specific criteria/conditions. to Gylly Wellbeing Swimmers to deliver three six-week Healing from Abandonment courses, supporting people who have experienced trauma and helping them build the tools they need to move forward.
The funding covered venue hire, course materials, tutor costs, advertising and running expenses, enabling 24 people to access specialist support completely free of charge.
The programme explored the lasting impact of abandonment and trauma, helping participants understand the stages of abandonment, recognise unhelpful coping behaviours and develop practical techniques to support their recovery. Through guided discussions, visualisation exercises and peer support, participants were able to reflect on their own experiences in a safe, compassionate environment.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and highlighted not only the personal benefits for those attending, but also the positive impact on their families and wider support networks. For many, it was the first time they had found a space where they truly felt understood.

Earlier this summer, we visited Gylly Wellbeing Swimmers to see the impact this group has on its local residents. We met members of the group, joined them on the beach and heard some incredibly moving stories about the difference the community has made to their lives.
One member told us:
“It’s the best thing in my life. It’s been brilliant. I’ve met lots of friends and the wellbeing coaching got me into the sea. My confidence has improved, my fitness has improved.
It’s a community to join so you’re not alone. It’s scary on your own, but there’s always somebody here. There’s always a friendly face to swim with and everyone looks out for each other. It’s a safe environment. It’s been life-changing. Since retiring, it’s given me a whole new community. I even moved closer to the area because of the group.”
Another member shared:
“Two years ago I was in a very dark place, but now I’ve found this group. The sea is my sanctuary.”
Stories like these demonstrate that community groups offer so much more than activities. They create places where people feel they belong, where friendships are formed and where individuals can rebuild their confidence, improve their wellbeing and know they are never facing life’s challenges alone.
At Cornwall Community Foundation, we know that strong communities are built on connection. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we can continue supporting grassroots organisationsGroups of people coming together on a local level to address an issue. like Gylly Wellbeing Swimmers, helping people across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly find hope, friendship and a brighter future.
