TravellerSpace support the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community through winter with a grant from the Surviving Winter fund

TravellerSpace is a registered charity supporting the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community, our second largest minority ethnic group in Cornwall. They work to break down barriers, raise awareness and support the community with safe spaces, education, health and wellbeing interventions.

January of 2024, the charity was awarded £5,000 from the Surviving Winter FundA sum of money made available for grant making, often with specific criteria/conditions. and in turn offered small grants to the people at most risk from the effects of winter.

200 individuals were supported.
TravellerSpace were able to provide food for those without, and money to buy gas bottles or put money on electricity cards. They also helped with vehicle repair costs for roadside van dwellers who need to move every day and rely on a working vehicle.

The difference this grant has made to the lives of beneficiariesIndividuals being supported by the group or organisation applying for a grant. is massive. For all of our projectA piece of work that delivers an output. users without access to money for food & warmth, it is the difference between being cold and hungry, and going to bed with a meal inside you, in a warm van. There is no more basic need than what this grant fulfils.

One young person was parked in the car park of a dance studio, and was getting notes left on their van, telling them to move, and suffering abuse. Someone phoned us, and a staff member went to see them. They were very distraught, and had no food, or money for fuel to move elsewhere. We were able to provide food, fuel money, details of food banks and safe places to park. They moved the next day, and have our number if they need further support.

About the fund 

The Surviving Winter Fund was established over ten years ago to support those facing additional hardship through the tough winter months. Annually we appeal to people to donate their winter fuel allowance, if they can spare it, to help those struggling.
