The Goonhilly Wind Farm Community Fund
The Village Hall and Walled Garden Charity Group operate the village hall at the heart of the community. They run a wide range of events such as live theatre and music, films, Cornish evenings, apple days, art exhibitions, arts festival, fetes, and community gatherings. There is no evening public transport available from the village, so the space and events help with feelings of rural isolationLack of access to people, services and transportation due to rural location. and cultural exclusion.
Thanks to previous support from the Goonhilly Wind Farm Community FundA sum of money made available for grant making, often with specific criteria/conditions. the group were able to convert two storage rooms into useable community spaces. However, they needed furniture, so an additional grant was awarded.
The spaces were furnished with durable chairs, folding tables, bookcases, and a coffee station. Immediately the rooms were out to use for the book club, craft group, Tai Chi classes, and private events.
Eighteen volunteers supported the projectA piece of work that delivers an output., which increased community resilience and social networks. Sheila, a new resident, shared how joining the book club provided her with emotional and practical support during a family crisis, highlighting the improved mental well-being fostered by the initiative.
The project exceeded its goals, with beneficiariesIndividuals being supported by the group or organisation applying for a grant. “astonished at the transformation.”
Overall, the project created much-needed, flexible spaces that continue to attract interest, furthering the charity’s mission to strengthen community ties and enhance well-being.
About the Fund
Wind turbines have been generating renewable electricity at Goonhilly Downs on the Lizard since 1993 and in 2010 the 14 original machines were replaced with six modern turbines, more than trebling the clean energy outputAn output is a measurable change.
