Cornwall Community Foundation grants help communities recover from Storm Goretti

Grants from Cornwall Community Foundation Emergency Fund were able to provide grants to help community groups offer support and vital resource to help recover from the destruction.

Earlier this month, Storm Goretti tore through Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, leaving homes without power, blocked roads due to fallen trees, and, tragically, loss of life. As always, Cornwall came together with resilience and community spirit, supporting those in need and helping with the clear up themselves.

Some of the beneficiaries include:

Lizard CHILD Trust Nursery
The nursery received support to help families cope with losses caused by the storm and ongoing severe weather. Grants and vouchers were provided to cover essential building repairs, replace lost food, and support families unable to work due to unsafe roads or closures. This assistance ensures families can secure their homes, maintain safety and wellbeing, and regain a sense of normality after disruption.

Sparkle Foundation
This grant funded the procurement and distribution of essential relief supplies, including food, seasonal clothing, and hygiene products, for families severely affected or displaced by the storm. By providing a combination of physical goods and flexible £100 vouchers, the project offered immediate relief, reduced stress, and prevented families from falling into debt while waiting for longer-term support.

Isles of Scilly Charitable Trust

The Trust distributed funds to residents and community organisations to meet urgent needs arising from Storm Goretti with the islands suffering from the highest recorded wind speeds in the country. Grants helped the community begin the long process of recovery and rebuilding, providing immediate support to those most affected.

Lamorna Village Hall
Lamorna Village Hall received funding to strengthen community resilience by purchasing portable power storage units, solar-rechargeable batteries, gas camping stoves, motion-sensor lights, and heated blankets. The hall can now provide emergency shelter, heating, cooking, and communication for residents, particularly older or vulnerable villagers, ensuring the community is better prepared for future storms.

Tamas Haydu, CEO of CCF, said:
“In times of crisis, the strength of our communities really shines bright. Through the Emergency Fund, we’re proud to support those impacted by Storm Goretti, helping communities across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly access immediate relief.”

Through these grants, Cornwall Community Foundation has helped families and communities bridge the gap between immediate disaster and long-term recovery – providing safety, stability, and dignity in challenging times.
