A grant from the Howton Farm Solar Fund helps organisers welcome over 6,000 people to the Saltash May Fair
The Howton Farm Solar Fund
The Saltash Fair Committee was set up in 1980 to ‘continue the revival of the community spirit in Saltash’. The committed team of volunteers delivers an annual two-day May Fair, featuring a street market, live music, and wellness activities such as the Saltash Half Marathon and outdoor yoga.
A £1,930 grant from the Howton Solar Farm FundA sum of money made available for grant making, often with specific criteria/conditions. covered key elements, including a marquee for a band performance, wildflower seed packets for children, a commemorative oak tree, and Coronation-themed water bottles for volunteers.
The fair engaged 55 volunteers and over 6,000 people attended, promoting community cohesion and local pride. Over 320 children participated in activities such as litter picks and a treasure hunt, receiving wildflower seeds as rewards. Local environmental groups, including Saltash Environmental Action, collaborated with the event, highlighting the fair’s environmental focus.
The fair fostered community connections and resilience. A resident recovering from mental health challenges shared that participating in an outdoor yoga session at the fair boosted her confidence, inspiring her to join a local yoga course. A single parent expressed gratitude that the free activities allowed her family to enjoy a weekend of fun, strengthening their sense of belonging in Saltash.
