Urgent appeal: Surviving Winter

The Sparkle Academy sprinkling magic in and around Helston

The Sparkle Academy in Helston provides services to 19 schools, 5,000 pupils, their families and communities and brings people of all ages together, creating positive links and community inclusion.

They were awarded a grant of £5,000 from our Emergency Fund which was used to create food parcels delivered to the doors of families with little or no income. Their parcels are based on food that can be used to make many meals from as they contain store cupboard staples that stretch a long way.

Over the course of the first lockdown, it was estimated that over 1000 people at least benefitted from the fund.

Leigh Yates explains “The magic around this fund and what we were able to do, as people came forward to help cook for the homeless and batch cook for families and other vulnerable groups. No one knows who or how people come to be in need because of Covid, it's not the 'usual suspects' or the obvious but it's people in working poverty, the middle classes, and people with great pride who simply won't go to a food bank. The rapid response from CCF means we can pass this on to those who qualify. People are scared during this pandemic and having almost instant support makes a huge difference. The difference from this fund is often and quite simply, people eating. The situation is worsening as the ripple effects of the pandemic grow but no one is going hungry and the most magical part is that they know there is no judgement, just people caring about others, stigma-free and quickly.”
