Celebrating Walker Lines Gymnasium Trust’s King’s Award for Voluntary Service

At Cornwall Community Foundation, we are constantly inspired by the dedication and impact of grassroots organisations across Cornwall. Last week, our team had the privilege of attending a very special occasion – the presentation of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) to Walker Lines Gymnasium Trust (WLGT) in Bodmin.

This prestigious award – the highest honour a local voluntary group can receive in the UK, equivalent to an MBE – recognises the extraordinary efforts of WLGT in ensuring that affordability is never a barrier to participation. Their commitment to inclusivity and accessibility has made a lasting difference in the Bodmin community and beyond.

Since 2013, WLGT has worked tirelessly to restore a historic building, transforming it into a vital community hub. Their work has supported Bodmin Boxing Club, the Small-bore Club, and numerous other local groups, all while creating opportunities for people of all ages to engage in activities that enhance wellbeing.

Our CEO, Tamas Haydu, after attending the event said:

The award was officially presented by Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO OBE, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, at a ceremony attended by Trust Chairman, Balu Madhvani, and Trust Secretary, Allan Foard. It was a proud moment for everyone involved and a recognition of the dedication of WLGT’s volunteers, partners, and supporters.

At Cornwall Community Foundation, we know that strong communities are built through collaboration, generosity, and hard work, and WLGT is a shining example of this. We are delighted to see them receive such well-earned recognition and look forward to continuing our support for grassroots organisations that make Cornwall a better place for all.
