What the CAF UK Local Giving Report 2026 means for Cornwall
The newly published CAF UK Local Giving Report 2026 highlights a powerful truth: people are more likely to give when they feel connected to their community and can see the impact of local action.
For Cornwall Community Foundation, the findings strongly reinforce the importance of place-based philanthropy and community-led giving.
The report shows that people who believe charities make a positive difference in their local area are far more likely to donate, volunteer, and get involved in community life. At a time when national charitable giving is declining, trust in local organisations and visible local impact have become increasingly important.
This is especially relevant in Cornwall, where strong community identity and local pride remain defining characteristics of life across the county. The South West was identified in the report as one of the regions with the highest levels of community engagement and belief in the positive impact of local charities.
For community foundations, this presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. By connecting donors directly with local need, supporting grassroots organisationsGroups of people coming together on a local level to address an issue., and sharing stories of real change, Cornwall Community Foundation helps turn community pride into practical action.
The report also highlights that many people want to become more involved in their communities but are unsure how to start. Community foundations can play a vital role as convenors and connectors — helping people find meaningful ways to give, volunteer, and support local causes.
Emma de Closset, Chief Executive at UK Community Foundations, featured in the report, and said:
“This report highlights something that community foundations have always known: generosity is shaped by connection, not just income. When people feel proud of where they live and can see the impact of local charities, they are more likely to give, volunteer and stay involved.
“Across the UK, people donated a smaller share of their income in 2025, yet this research also reminds us that money is only part of the story. More than a third of people said they engage in local activities and many more want the chance to feel more involved. It is our collective responsibility across sectors to make these opportunities more visible.
“Community foundations connect people with local causes that matter. Rooted in place, we work with donors, local organisations and residents to identify need and support work in the beating heart of our communities. Strengthening place-based giving means more than increasing one-off donations. It means building trust, belonging and pride in the places people call home.”
Ultimately, the report validates the growing importance of community foundations as trusted local infrastructure. In uncertain times, local giving remains one of the most effective ways to strengthen communities, build resilience, and create lasting change across Cornwall.
