World Suicide Prevention Day – 10 September
Today, on Suicide Prevention Day, we’re shining a light on the incredible organisations across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly working every day to prevent suicide, support those affected by suicide, improve mental health and make sure no one has to face things alone.
From creating safe spaces to talk, to providing peer support, building connection and helping people find their way through difficult times, these organisations are making a real difference in communities across the duchy.
💛 Georgia’s Voice creates safe, confidential spaces for young women aged 18–25, helping them feel heard, supported and less alone. (pictured)
💛 A Band of Brothers brings men together through mentoring and community, helping young men build connection, belonging and purpose.
💛 Sunrise Cornwall CIC supports people affected by suicide, helping those living with the ripple effects of loss to find connection, hope and healing.
💛 Penhaligon’s Friends provides specialist bereavement support for children and young people across Cornwall, including those affected by the death of someone through suicide. Their work helps young people feel understood, supported and less alone at a time when life can feel incredibly difficult.
💛 Cornwall Mind provides vital mental health and wellbeing support across Cornwall, including support for people bereaved by suicide and programmes focused on resilience and prevention.
💛 The Sparkle Foundation is working to support men who are lonely, isolated or struggling with their mental health. Through Steve’s Legacy, men can access free, professionally facilitated groups where they can talk openly, understand difficult emotions and find support.
These are just a handful of groups we’ve had the privilege of supporting recently.
Suicide rates in Cornwall are 46% higher than England overall. A shocking statistic that has unfortunately affected so many of us. We are proud to be supporting groups across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who are working to change this.
Today, and every day, let’s keep talking and listening.
If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. In Cornwall, you can call NHS 111 and select option 2 for 24/7 mental health support. You can also call Samaritans on 116 123, free, day or night. If someone’s life is at immediate risk, call 999.
The world is a better place with you in it 💛
